Fall Pruning

Fall webworm - what is it?

Fall webworm- what is it? It’s a very common native caterpillar that feeds on many varieties of deciduous trees and shrubs. They form a large web (nest) on the ends of the branches towards the end of summer/early fall.
They will feed on and skeletonize the leaves within their tent like web. While this may look alarming, they’ll rarely do enough damage to impact the health of at tree unless it’s very immature, in which case simply pull off the web or clip the branch out.
For medium and larger trees, where the nest is out of reach, just leave it alone and the birds will have a feast, especially hummingbirds!
Besides, the leaves are nearly ready to fall off the tree anyways.
The verdict on fall webworm; feel good about yourself by doing nothing and feed our feathered friends!

Fall is Lawn Renovation Time

A better lawn next spring starts with what you do this fall. If you’ve got thin grass, bare spots, moss, or compacted soil, now is the time to give your lawn a little attention!

Fall Is for Fixing Your Lawn
If your lawn is thin, patchy, compacted, or just looking tired after summer, fall is the time to fix it!
Cooler temperatures and warm soil create great conditions for new grass to establish. A combination of aeration, topdressing, and seeding can help get your lawn back on track.

Start With Aeration
Over time, soil becomes compacted from mowing, foot traffic, pets, and everyday use. Aeration removes small plugs of soil, allowing air, water, and nutrients to reach the roots while creating better seed-to-soil contact.
Seeing moss in your lawn? That can be a clue that something isn’t quite right. Compaction, excess moisture, shade, poor drainage, or soil conditions can all create an environment where moss thrives and grass struggles.
Instead of just getting rid of the moss, we want to figure out why it’s there in the first place.

Top-dress & Seed
After aeration, topdressing can help improve the growing environment and give new seed better contact with the soil.
Then comes the seed! Choosing the right type of grass for your conditions matters. A sunny lawn may need something different than a shady area, and high-traffic or drought-prone lawns have their own challenges.
And don’t forget—new seed needs consistent moisture to get established.

Have You Considered Clover?
Clover isn’t necessarily the lawn enemy it was once considered to be!
For homeowners looking for a more natural lawn, clover can be mixed with turfgrass to create an attractive alternative. It stays relatively low, flowers for pollinators, and even fixes nitrogen naturally.
