By using a method known as “Integrated pest management” (IPM) we combine chemical treatments, cultural practices, and biological controls to manage pests to an acceptable level that will not damage your lawn. Our goal is to monitor pest outbreaks before the populations get out of control. Using Cornell Cooperative Extension growing-degree data, we proactively monitor insect activity and target treatments precisely.
Core aeration, either alone or paired with compost topdressing, gives your lawn a lift. By removing plugs of dirt, aeration allows air, water, and nutrients to get to the roots and reduces thatch buildup. Adding compost improves soil structure and drainage.
Late Summer / Early Fall is the best time for overseeding to thicken your turf. This is best done in conjunction with lawn aeration.
We use a carbon based topdressing that will stimulate root development while maximizing nutrient uptake.
“Keep Mosquitoes at Bay with Broccolo’s Garlic Spray”
Mosquito Barrier is a very strong liquid garlic made from very potent garlic cloves. The garlic used in Mosquito Barrier is a very powerful variety which is much more potent than the garlic found in grocery stores (in fact, our lab people refer to it as "super garlic"). Garlic has a natural sulfur which repels mosquitoes. Spraying garlic to keep insects away is not something new, farmers and master gardeners have been doing it for many generations.
Moisture Manager uses proprietary soil moisture management technology to maintain ideal moisture levels between periods of rain and drought. By doing so, it is universally proven to reduce plant water consumption by as much as 50%. So whether your goal is to improve turf color, increase seed germination, maintain hanging or potted plants, or simply to save on your water bill and conserve this precious resource, count on Moisture Manager to deliver.
What can Moisture Manager do?
• Control or Eliminate Dry Spots
• Improve Seed Germination
• Enhance Nutrient Efficiency
• Increase Transplant Survival
• Optimize Pesticide Efficiency
• Reduce Watering Expenses
Let us help you with regular weeding or pruning throughout the season, cleaning up in the spring, dividing or removing overgrown plantings, and fall leaf clean up. You can count on our trained horticulturists to know a weed from a treasured perennial! Our program consists of 1 Pre-Emergent treatment that prevents weed seeds from germinating and 4 post emergent treatments spread throughout the year at optimal times to kill weeds.
Our 6 visit program is an affordable and scientifically proven plan for optimum results. Broccolo uses Cornell University’s recommendations.
The fertilizers are not harmful and we spot treat for weeds, so once the liquid weed treatment is dry, it has absorbed into the leaves of the weeds and no longer is a threat to you or your family. Another option would be to have Broccolo treat your weeds in the front yard only and limit treatment in the back yard to fertilizer only. We do offer organic fertilizer; however no organic weed control has been effective enough to offer our customers.
We can cater you your needs and you may have as many visits as you want- by cutting back from the full program, you will lose the guaranteed grub control and any free service calls.
No. Broccolo believes in being as environmentally responsible as possible, so we will only treat if we know you have a grub history or we inspect and find too many grubs present. Lawns can tolerate up to ten grubs per square foot without being damaging.
We start visits after April 1st, weather depending. We then space visits roughly every 6 weeks through the rest of the season.
The Crabgrass pre-emergent is applied in the early spring. If we get heavy downpours in the weeks following, it may ‘break the barrier’ that the product created and allow for germination. Other things that will break the barrier are heavy raking, aeration and heavy foot traffic. All of these are beyond the control of Broccolo technicians. We are adding a second pre-emergent crabgrass treatment on the second visit to attempt to resolve these issues.
You can seed at any time, however if we have used weed control or crabgrass pre-emergent, you will need to create a thin barrier of topsoil for the seed to have a bed to germinate. We recommend seeding sunny areas in the fall and shady areas in the spring.
The turf is competing with the tree for sunlight, and water. The best solutions are to put down some grass seed every spring, or consider a mulched tree ring with some groundcover or shade garden plants.
Moss is an opportunist, it is only filling in areas where the grass isn’t. Ask, “why is the turf weak here?” compaction? drought damage? We do not treat or kill moss- it becomes less visible if you suggest raising the mower blades, if that is not an option for them- it can be raked up and reseeded. LIME is not a solution for moss- in this area, there are only a few spots that have extremely acidic soil (near Thornell road and some spots in West Irond- just look at the size of the rhododendrons and you can tell where!)
This is an undesirable grass found in most people’s lawns, you can usually see it have a different color in patches in the early morning dew. This grass thrives in wet areas but will grow just about anywhere. It is the first thing in your lawn to brown out in any sort of drought. The only solution for this (aside from living with it) is to use herbicide to kill the grass and reseed the areas but there are no guarantees that it won’t come back!
Ground ivy is a low-growing, creeping, invasive perennial. It spreads by seed and the vining stems (stolons) which root at their nodes. We will treat the ivy with herbicide on our visits, but take note that this invasive weed will take several continuing treatments. Be sure and seed the area as weeds are opportunistic and will grow wherever there is soil and no grass.
