Fall Pruning (What about Hydrangeas?)

In honor of our great team we are taking the day off for our landscape crews, lawn care crews and the garden center and we will see you on Tuesday! As we come into the fall season, please remember that this is the optimum timing for sowing seeds (grass or wildflowers) and this is the best time to plant trees and shrubs as they will wake up in the spring happy and ready to spread their roots!

Fall Pruning

The question always remains, when should I prune my flowering shrubs? Especially my Hydrangeas? Overall, less is more when it comes to pruning. You can lightly touch up the shape if needed and it’s fine to leave on spent blooms for winter interest/birds. If you are looking to reduce the size of your shrubs or renovate them, wait until dormancy.

Hydrangeas are in a league of their own but the rules are pretty simple, if you find the buds are forming on old wood, you don’t want to prune them in the fall. This means you will be pruning off next years blossoms.

These varieties include Big Leaf (macrophylla), Mountain (serratta) and Oakleaf (quercifolia).
These will be your Lacecaps, Mopheads, Endless summer, and Oakleafs.

The Hydrangeas that you do want to prune in the fall will bloom on new wood, which include Panicle (paniculata) and Smooth (arborescens).
Panicle Hydrangeas include Limelight, Vanilla Strawberry, and Bobo. You can cut them back by up to a third in the fall if needed. The Smooth Hydrangeas include Annabelle and Incrediball, you can lightly trim in the fall or wait until early spring.
