Project Presentation

Landscaping is as much design and aesthetic as it is practical and utilitarian. The best landscapes incorporate both.  Here, we were able to get the garbage receptacles out of the way of vehicles, improve safety, enhance drainage, and provide an overall improved look.

This backyard upgrade with a mix of pavers, locally sourced pea stone, and boulders.  This allowed us to create a flatter patio on a steeper grade and incorporate natural elements that could have been a sterile patio look into a perfect backyard hangout. Phase 2 is plantings that will help nestle the patio into their backyard even better.

Hills create challenges for maintaining any landscape.  Hills also create opportunities for displaying stunning plants and hardscape features such as this boulder wall. The hillside went from a hard to access area to a beautiful slope.  Other examples of utility and aesthetics blending are drainage solutions like rain gardens or dry stream beds, or even permeable patios and driveways.

Lawn care: Less is More

“Less is More” is the best practice for healthy lawn care. Spring rolling and de-thatching does not help but actually compacts and disrupts healthy roots. Aeration is the best practice to thicken the turf and encourage root growth.
Weed treatments can weaken the grass so we advise spot treating dandelions but don’t worry about low growing small weeds that don’t compete with the grass.
Catch that dandelion weed before it seeds and minimize the spread. If there are a lot of weeds, treat that section and fertilize to help fill in the existing grass. Late summer or early fall is a great time to reseed thin areas when less weeds are competing.
Spring fertilizer should be minimal, and timing should be limited to three times a year when the grass needs replenishing.
If there are large patches of thin turfgrass, consider a different landscape solution of shady ground-covers and bird/butterfly habitats for those hot sunny dry areas.
