Pruning Standards

Broccolo staff uses specific terminology to best communicate our goals for each type of plant. Click here to learn about several types of shrub pruning that we offer, and if you can believe it, this is a watered-down version! We have removed much of the detail that we use for our crews and training, but this will give you an overlook of options. What type of pruning do your shrubs need?

Types of Shrub Pruning

  • Clearance: Removing plant material that is obstructing structures such as walkways, driveways, gutters, roofs, etc.
  • Uplift: Removal of lower branches of shrub to allow better access underneath for mowing, mulching or planting.
  • Thin: Includes the removal of crossing/rubbing branches, dead wood, competing branches and sucker growth to increase air circulation and light penetration.
  • Reduce: To decrease the height and/or width of a shrub or tree.  During the growing season, reduction can typically be ¼ of the overall plant size.  During the dormant season, more can be taken, but no more than ⅓-½ without compromising the health of the plant.
  • Shape: Prune by hand to enhance natural, open form of plant by removing and/or reducing selected branches, or removal of long ends of branches that detract from its natural shape.
  • Natural Pruning: Loosely structured, non-geometric form obtained by selectively taking deeper cuts. This allows deciduous shrubs such as burning bush, forsythia, and Weigelia to appear their best.
  • Shear: To create a formal, tight effect.  Maintenance of a formal look will require more frequent pruning throughout the season. This causes woody interiors with an outer shell of foliage; the lack of air flow can create disease and insect problems.  Tightly sheared plants also impede water and thorough coverage with insecticide, making control of these issues difficult.
    • Plants that will tolerate shearing well include:
      •  Yew, Potentilla, Privet, Spirea.
    • Other plants may be sheared only by specific instruction and only include:
      • Arborvitae, Euonymus, Juniper.

Note: Plants that are sheared repetitively should be thinned by hand periodically to reduce potential insect and disease problems.

  • Renovate: Pruning to rejuvenate plants by selectively removing a maximum of ⅓– ½ of the old wood, encouraging the growth of new, healthy shoots.  This process reduces the height and width of the shrub, as well as the quantity of flowers the first year.  Renovations should be done in the winter when plants are dormant due to the amount of plant material removed.  The more severe the renovation, the greater the risk in recovery for plants to fill in with foliage; plant response to renovation varies considerably depending on species and site conditions.  Typically this is a 3 year process.

  • Deadhead: The removal of spent blossoms from flowering shrubs. This is not necessary for plant health; leaving seed heads will not reduce bloom size or quality.  If this service is desired it must be clearly indicated on the service contract due to its time-consuming nature.

  • Specialty: Highly skilled, artistic pruning to reveal a specialized form. This includes Oriental style for weeping Japanese Maples, topiary, orchard style, espalier, and pollarding. Do not attempt these pruning styles unless you have been trained and given clearance to do so!

Broccolo Pruning Standards: Professional Shrub Pruning for Healthy, Beautiful Landscapes

Proper pruning is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — aspects of landscape care. At Broccolo Lawn & Landscape, we use clear, specific pruning terminology to ensure every shrub and ornamental plant is cared for with intention, precision, and long-term plant health in mind.

Our crews are trained using detailed pruning standards developed through years of horticultural expertise. What follows is a homeowner-friendly overview of the types of shrub pruning services we offer, so you can better understand what your landscape needs and why professional pruning matters.

Why Proper Shrub Pruning Matters

Correct pruning:

  • Improves plant health and longevity
  • Enhances natural form and seasonal interest
  • Reduces pest and disease pressure
  • Protects structures and walkways
  • Supports sustainable, low-maintenance landscapes

Not all pruning is the same — and choosing the wrong method at the wrong time can permanently damage a plant. That’s why Broccolo approaches pruning as both a science and an art.

Types of Shrub Pruning We Offer

Clearance Pruning

Clearance pruning removes plant material that interferes with structures or access points such as:

  • Walkways and driveways
  • Gutters and roofs
  • Doors, windows, and siding

This type of pruning improves safety, prevents structural damage, and maintains clean lines around your home.

Uplift Pruning

Uplift pruning involves removing lower branches of shrubs to:

  • Improve access for mowing and mulching
  • Create space for planting beneath
  • Improve air circulation and visibility

This technique is commonly used for foundation plantings and layered landscape designs.

Thinning Pruning

Thinning focuses on selective removal of:

  • Crossing or rubbing branches
  • Dead or diseased wood
  • Competing stems and sucker growth

Thinning increases airflow and light penetration, which reduces disease risk and encourages healthier, more balanced growth

Reduction Pruning

Reduction pruning decreases the height and/or width of a shrub or tree while maintaining its natural form.

  • During the growing season: typically no more than 25%
  • During dormancy: up to ⅓–½, depending on species

Excessive reduction can compromise plant health, which is why Broccolo follows species-specific guidelines.

Shaping (Natural Form Pruning)

This is hand pruning used to:

  • Enhance the plant’s natural structure
  • Remove distracting or overextended branches
  • Avoid the rigid look of shearing

Shaping preserves the plant’s character while keeping it visually balanced and attractive.

Natural Pruning

Natural pruning creates a loose, organic form by making deeper, selective cuts. This method allows deciduous shrubs such as:

  • Burning Bush
  • Forsythia
  • Weigela

to display their best natural habit, seasonal movement, and flowering potential.

Shearing (Formal Pruning)

Shearing produces a tight, geometric appearance and is typically used in formal landscapes. However, it requires frequent maintenance and can create:

  • Dense outer foliage with woody interiors
  • Reduced airflow
  • Increased insect and disease risk

Plants that tolerate shearing well:

  • Yew
  • Potentilla
  • Privet
  • Spirea

Plants that should only be sheared with specific instruction:

  • Arborvitae
  • Euonymus
  • Juniper

Important note: Plants that are repeatedly sheared should be thinned by hand periodically to reduce pest and disease issues.

Renovation Pruning

Renovation pruning rejuvenates older or overgrown shrubs by removing ⅓–½ of the oldest wood to stimulate new growth.

  • Best performed in winter dormancy
  • Reduces flowering in the first year
  • Typically a 3-year process

Because plant response varies by species and site conditions, renovation pruning is carefully evaluated by our team before proceeding.

Deadheading

Deadheading is the removal of spent flowers from flowering shrubs. While it is not necessary for plant health, it may be desired for aesthetic reasons.

Because this service is labor-intensive, it must be clearly specified in the service contract.

Specialty Pruning

Specialty pruning requires advanced training and artistic skill. These techniques include:

  • Japanese Maple (Oriental style) pruning
  • Topiary
  • Orchard pruning
  • Espalier
  • Pollarding

These styles should never be attempted without professional training, as improper cuts can permanently damage plants.
